Rasmussen Poll: Obama's Lead in NM Grows

Albuquerque, NM – A new poll finds Democrat Barack Obama with a ten point lead over Republican John McCain in the final days of the presidential race in New Mexico. The Rasmussen poll was based on the responses of five hundred likely voters, and showed Obama had the support of 54 percent while McCain had 44 percent.

Voters Allowed to Cast Ballot without Absentee Ballots

Albuquerque, NM – Secretary of State Mary Herrera says voters who haven't yet received their absentee ballots by mail can vote without it. Herrera sent word to county clerks Wednesday to implement a process to allow those voters to cast ballots early or on Election Day. KUNM's Jim Williams reports.

ACLU of New Mexico Files Suit Alleging 'Voter Intimidation'

Las Cruces, NM – The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico filed a class action lawsuit Monday, alleging that members of the Republican Party violated the privacy rights of 92 registered New Mexico voters. The lawsuit claims that members of the party illegally used confidential social security numbers to conduct background checks and then distributed sensitive voter information to the press. Food Banks Feel the Crunch of Economic Downturn

Las Cruces, NM – A number of local food banks are feeling the crunch of the nation's economic downturn. On average, Community Action Agency of Las Cruces feeds five to ten thousand people a month. Most of the food bank's donations are collected through food drives; but Executive Director Rebecca Reyes says the amount they've collected in recent months has gone down substantially. NMED Officials to Meet with Hurley Residents

Las Cruces, NM – Next Wednesday, the state environment department will hold a public meeting in Grant County.

Environment officials want to hear comments from residents regarding the proposed plan for the Hurley soils investigation unit.

According to the state agency an investigation indicated that the soil in the town of Hurley contains elevated concentrations of metal mostly copper. The contamination is a result of historic ore processing operations. Chino Mines Company has proposed removing the contaminated soil.
