NM US Lawmakers hope to Recover AIG Money

Las Cruces, NM – Federal lawmakers are considering proposals aimed at recovering at least some of the bailout dollars handed out to AIG executives as bonuses. Thursday, the House of Representatives approved a punitive tax on the bonuses while several lawmakers, including members of New Mexico's congressional delegation, are pressuring AIG to recover the money. Traffic Cameras Record More than 4700 Violations in First 16 Days

Las Cruces, NM – In the first 16 days of being operational, traffic enforcement cameras installed at four intersections throughout the City of Las Cruces recorded more than 4700 traffic violations. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, those drivers will just receive warning letters in the mail for now, but tickets will be issued at the end of the month.

Governor Richardson Signs Bill to Repeal Death Penalty

Las Cruces, NM – Wednesday Governor Bill Richardson signed legislation to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico, calling it the "toughest decision" of his political career. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, House Bill 285 abolishes the death penalty in the state, replacing it with life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Messages Warning People of Gang Violence are Unsubstantiated

Las Cruces, NM – Wednesday, a series of emails and text messages warning people to avoid certain stores in Las Cruces began circulating the city. According to the Las Cruces Police Department, the messages told residents that gang members were planning to kill customers at area businesses, as part of an initiation, but as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, police investigators say the messages are NOT credible.
