Gov. Martinez Issues Drought Declaration

 

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) -- New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez has issued a drought declaration covering the entire state.

In a statement she said fire danger is high, water reservoirs are low and some communities have been forced to take 'dramatic steps' to reduce water consumption.

Martinez's declaration will make it easier for farmers, ranchers and communities to secure federal funding for expenses related to the drought.

Border Book Festival Takes Over Mesilla

 

 

(MESILLA, NM) -- The longest running book fair in New Mexico is underway and as the event helps draw hundreds of people to the town of Mesilla every year.

2012 is the year of healing and transformation and for Denise Chavez, director of the Border Book Festival, it’s been well planned journey.

“It reaches across lines.  That’s one of our beliefs systems in the Border Book Festival that art can heal and reach people of all ages and backgrounds and cultures,” she said.

Community Helping Women's Shelter in Juarez

 

(LAS CRUCES) -- Community members are coming together to help neighbors across the border in Cuidad Juarez.

Patricia Hernandez is volunteering to raise money for a place helping hundreds of women living in Cuidad Juarez.

“It gives women hope and a safe place to go that they know where they are, it doesn’t have to be that way,” she said.

Centro de Proteccion de Mujer a Mujer is a shelter for women dealing with domestic violence.  The facility gives victims and their children a safe place to stay while providing much needed services in the area.
