January 17, 2014 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with members of the Colonias Development Council, Executive Director, Diana Bustamante, and Lorenza Dorado, Coordinator for “Promotoras de Apoyo Familiar,” which means promoters for family support.

One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, which equates to one billion women. Sixteen years ago, to help end this violence against women and girls, Eve Ensler, author of the “Vagina Monologues” created a global event, “One Billion Rising for Justice.” This worldwide event is held every February 14th. A short film was created to help participants and survivors understand the impact of this abuse. To view their video and more information visit their website at www.onebillionrising.org.

Las Cruces will again join this global event and celebrate their second annual participation through art, dance, song, testimonies, and more. Participants are asked to wear a white or red t-shirt and gather on Friday, February 14th at the St. Genevieve’s Monument Site on the North Main Street (Downtown Mall) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  For more information locally contact the Colonias Development Council at 575-647-2744.
