13-Year-Old Sentenced For Murder

By KRWG News

Portales, NM – A 13-year-old boy convicted of shooting an Eastern New Mexico University student has been given the maximum penalty under New Mexico law.

Curry County District Attorney Matt Chandler says Judge Drew Tatum ordered the boy committed to juvenile custody until he is 21.

The boy was convicted in April of second degree murder for the July 2010 shooting of Angel Vale. Prosecutors say he broke into Vale's house in Portales, stole her fiance's rifle, then shot her when she stumbled upon him with the gun in her back yard.

Prosecutors say state law prevented them from seeking adult sanctions against the boy
