17-Year-Old Shot And Killed At Birthday Party

Investigators with the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office have obtained an arrest warrant for a 27-year-old Salem man after witnesses say he shot and killed a 17-year-old boy during a birthday party Saturday night, July 27.

According to court records, the boy was at a birthday party for a 16-year-old female friend in the 200 block of Benino Torres in Rodey when the suspect, Efren Rey, showed up unannounced. The homeowner at the residence said Rey was not invited to the party and had ongoing problems with several people who were there at the time.

Rey reportedly began to argue with several people at the party before confronting the victim, firing one round into the air from a pistol he was reportedly carrying.

Witnesses say Rey reportedly told the victim he "wasn't playing around" and then fired another shot at the victim, striking him in the head. Rey fled the scene in what was described as a white in color, four-door GMC truck.

The victim died on the way to a Las Cruces-area hospital. Investigators have not yet released his name.

Rey is wanted on an open count of murder. He is described as six feet tall, with brown hair and brown eyes and weighs approximately 200 pounds.

The white truck Rey was reportedly driving has been located and seized by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

If anyone has any information on his whereabouts, you are asked to call the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority, (575) 526-0795
