2016 Adult Summer Reading Programs Set For Las Cruces

  Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave., officially began is annual summer reading program on June 1. This summer’s challenge to adults is “Exercise Your Mind, READ!”

Adults are invited to explore a variety of ways to improve their health and well-being, including fitness, nutrition, finance and stress relief. Take on a health or fitness challenge, try meditation, or learn to cook healthier foods.

All are also invited to play the “SPORTS Reading Literacy Game!”, as well as take part in the special programs offered throughout the nine weeks.

The following programs are being presented in the library:

  • Wednesday, June 8, 2 p.m.: "Eating for Health & Energy!" This workshop will address key foods and ways of eating that improve energy and overall health. Plus, the presenter will share her top tips for improving your energy quickly. Presented by Anela Flores, Certified Holistic Health Coach, Fitness Trainer and Yoga Instructor.

  • Wednesday, June 15, 2 p.m.: “Budgeting for Adults!” By the end of this workshop, participants will understand how to manage money and achieve their financial goals by preparing a personal spending plan and identifying ways to decrease spending. Presented by Mr. Rodolfo Acosta-Pérez, Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico.

  • Monday, June 20, 11 a.m.: “Beginning Belly Dancing!” Would you like to get in better shape, but are bored of doing random exercises at the gym? Have you ever wanted to try a new style of movement that is both easy and fun to learn? All skill and fitness levels are welcome. Presented by Susan Jewell, MyPlaceJewell. 

  • Wednesday, June 29, 2 p.m.: “Chair Exercises for a Healthy Back!” Have you ever been interested in trying yoga, but are afraid of the complicated-looking positions that appear to be required? Would you like to reduce your back pain and increase flexibility, but can’t get away from your desk? All skill and fitness levels are welcome. Presented by Colleen Boyd, Downtown Desert Yoga. 

  • Wednesday, July 6, 2 p.m.: “Mental Aerobics!” A fun, interactive time of mind games, puzzles, and other activities designed to help keep you mental sharp regardless of your mental ability. Presented by Carmella Lee, Librarian, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.   

  • Wednesday, July 13, 2 p.m.: “Savings for Adults!” It is never too early or too late to start saving. You have budgeted and identified an amount to save monthly. Where are you going to put your savings? By investing, you put the money you save to work making more money and increasing your wealth. Presented by Mr. Rodolfo Acosta-Pérez, Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico.

  • Wednesday, July 20, 2 p.m.: “Meditation/Mindfulness!” Tired of your mind going a mile a minute and would like to find some inner peace? Would you like to be more relaxed and energized after a busy day? All skill levels are welcome. Presented by Colleen Boyd, Downtown Desert Yoga. 

  • Wednesday, July 27. 2 p.m.: “Juicing/Smoothies for Your Health!” Learn the benefits and the good and bad of smoothies. There will also be recipes. Presented by Carmella Lee, Librarian, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.   

  • Wednesday, August 3, 2 p.m.: “How to Avoid Financial Scams!”  You have worked so hard to budget and save so you need to protect your wealth. Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes so how can you protect yourself.  Presented by Mr. Rodolfo Acosta-Pérez, Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico.
