Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) provides weekly solid waste services to more than 32,000 households. One of those residential services is monthly pick up of items too large for your trash bin and pick up of yard waste, or “green waste,” at your curb. There is no additional charge for this service.
“We hope residents will do everything possible to recycle their green waste so we can process it into rich organic material that is given back free to the community,” explains Robin Lawrence, interim solid waste administrator. To participate in the program, customers are asked to:
● put big items and green waste in separate piles at the curb by 6 a.m. on Grappler day with tree branches cut shorter than 5-feet in length in neat stacks and
● use heavy-duty CLEAR plastic bags to contain grass clippings and leaves to ensure that Green Grappler drivers see the bags contain green waste and not trash.
“Those simple actions reduce the amount of material unnecessarily going into Corralitos Regional Landfill and increase the amount of composted mulch we can return to the community,” explains Lawrence.
Newly designed bilingual schedules are being delivered to all LCU customers over the next few weeks and will be hanging on your trash containers. before the end of the year. Please review the schedule and keep it as a reference so you will know when the Grapplers will service your neighborhood and how the services work. The schedule explains when the Grapplers come to your street to pick up green waste. Both the Green Grappler and the regular Grappler come once monthly – on the same day – on one of your regular trash days.
