Agents with the U.S. Border Patrol have seized more than a quarter-million dollars of marijuana found abandoned in the southern New Mexico desert.
Agents spotted footprints crossing into the United States around noon Thursday while they were participating in a training session. They tracked the prints for about 3 miles until they came across two large bundles of marijuana under some brush.
A search ensued for the smugglers but it appeared from the tracks they headed back to Mexico.
Later that evening, agents working near Lordsburg found more footprints that led to nearly 250 pounds of marijuana. The drugs were inside six burlap-wrapped backpacks.
Authorities valued the two cashes of drugs at about $270,000.
