New Mexico – New Mexico education officials say 28 charter schools statewide will face an initial review of their enrollment numbers in the coming weeks.
State Secretary of Education-designate Hanna Skandera says special education and teacher training numbers grew sharply since year.
She wants to root out districts that she says are "gaming" the system by over-reporting those numbers.
State funding in New Mexico is funneled to districts through a formula that gives extra weight to students with special needs and teachers with additional training.
Staff from the PED and Legislative Finance Committee have already done a spot check of records at 34 school districts around New Mexico and found some problems.
Skandera has threatened to withhold state funding or freeze budgets for the districts facing outside audits, depending on what auditors find.
