5 Educators Arrested In El Paso Schools Fraud Scheme

Five veteran educators with the El Paso Independent School District have been arrested by the FBI on federal charges stemming from alleged conspiracy to defraud the state and federal accountability programs.

The El Paso Times reports that the five were arrested Wednesday. Only one of the defendants currently works in the El Paso school district.

Federal officials did not immediately say whether more arrests are possible in the 5½-year-old investigation.

Until Wednesday, only two other former administrators had been charged in the cheating scheme, which sought to falsely boost the school district's accountability scores by a variety of means, including preventing "limited English proficiency" students from taking the state standardized high school test.
