Abbott Calls For More Women's Health Funds As Opponent Presses The Issue

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R)

Republican Greg Abbott is emphasizing women in his new health agenda for Texas, which comes after Democrat Wendy Davis has lately made abortion and sexual assault issues in the governor's race.

Abbott on Wednesday called for increasing state funds for women's health by $50 million. The longtime Texas attorney general also proposed expanded services for sexual assault victims and postpartum depression.

The Davis campaign called the plan "hollow promises."

Davis revealed in a new memoir that she had an abortion in the 1990s. The Fort Worth state senator has criticized Abbott for continuing to defend new Texas abortion restrictions that a federal judge struck down last month.

Her first TV ad also hammered Abbott for siding against a rape victim's lawsuit during his time on the Texas Supreme Court.
