Authorities say officers shot and killed a man who lunged at police with two butcher knives.
Albuquerque chief Ray Schultz says the violence occurred Friday night near a gas station on San Mateo and Montgomery.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the incident began when police responded to a report that a 60-year-old black man was threatening two children with the knives.
Schultz says the suspect lunged and repeatedly tried to stab an officer until another officer, and possibly a third, shot him.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to a hospital where he died.
