Deming – The New Mexico chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is alleging mistreatment and poor living conditions at the Luna County Detention Center.
ACLU chapter president Peter Falley presented the Luna County Board of Commissioners with a letter this week detailing complaints made by family members of some of those imprisoned at the detention center.
Some of the allegations include a lack of air conditioning, sewage backups in cells, and unwarranted use of force and brutality by guards.
The Deming Headlight reports the ACLU asked the county to conduct a thorough investigation of conditions at the center and consider remedial actions to address issues raised by inmates and their families.
Board Chairman Javier Diaz said Monday the commission is looking into the matter.
