Airmen Save Time, Money At Auto Shop

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. – When the unexpected occurs, it's great to have a helping hand just around the corner. Vehicle repairs can be a big drain of your time and money. The Auto Hobby Shop at Holloman Air Force Base gives Airmen the opportunity to lighten the load and work on their vehicles for a minimum fee.

“It gives people who don't normally have a facility to use a better place to work on their vehicles, out of the weather, driveways and dorm parking lots.” said Mike Padilla, 49th Force Support Squadron Auto Hobby Shop tools and parts attendant. “It gives them a place to do maintenance on their vehicles and keep costs low.”

Airmen are allowed to bring in their vehicles and occupy a bay for an hourly fee, $5 an hour with a lift, and $3 without. Tools are also available for them to use at no extra charge, so there is no need to worry about buying or bringing your own.

“This shop has everything you need.” said Airman 1st Class Vergel Matheny, 49th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron avionics technician. “There are a lot more things on my car that I need to work on, so this is the best place for me.”

Other services are also available to Airmen. Tire rotations, oil changes and other fluid replacements are just a few. The employees are always available if someone needs tips or an extra hand.

“Part of our job is oversight, we always keep an eye on them to make sure they are doing everything in a safe manner and that no one is going to get hurt.” said Padilla. “At any time they can ask us if they need help.”

The Auto Hobby Shop is a great asset that is available to all of Team Holloman's personnel. Saving money and learning how to repair your own vehicle in a clean shop are two great and long-lasting benefits.

“I have saved thousands of dollars by coming here.” said Staff Sgt. William (last name withheld due to operational security constraints, 6th Reconnaissance Squadron sensor operator instructor.

The more Airmen use this shop, the more they can ensure that it will always be there when they need it and that it stays properly funded and maintained.

“This is probably one of the better shops that I have seen in the Air Force, if not the best.” said William. “Plus the way they take care of all the equipment and all the stuff available here, it's really nice.”
