Alamogordo Buys Soil Conditioner For Cottonwoods

Alamogordo is planning to buy four tons of a soil conditioning product to help flush out salt from soil around cottonwood trees in a park.

The Alamogordo Daily News quotes Parks Supervisor Erik Marion as saying the city will try out the product at Alameda Park.

It will be used on other areas of the city if it works.

The goal is to alleviate some of the salt that came from effluent water used to irrigate the trees.

Marion says the park's trees and much of the plant life around the city also have been negatively impacted by a harsh freeze about two years ago when temperatures plummeted to nearly 20 degrees below zero.

Alameda Park is lined with the cottonwoods, and a festival celebrating them is held there.
