Alamogordo Rejects Cell Phone Driving Ban

Drivers in Alamogordo can still legally text and talk on their cellphones while driving after the latest attempt to ban the practice seen as unsafe failed to win approval from the City Commission.

The vote this week was the latest of several attempts to pass an ordinance. Various efforts have drawn opposition from some commission members who argued it unenforceable or against its exemptions for law-enforcement officers.

Commissioner Jim Talbert was able to draw only one other supporter among the seven commissioners at Tuesday's meeting. Commissioner Nadia Sikes argued if the law only saved one life it would be a "good thing."

New Mexico doesn't specifically regulate cellphone use while driving although cities can.
