Albuquerque Police Name Officers Who Shot Man In Chase

Authorities have named the two Albuquerque veteran police officers who shot and killed a man suspected of kidnapping a woman and leading police on a high-speed chase.

Albuquerque police said Tuesday that officers Cornel Heitzman and Carlos Hernandez fatally shot 33-year-old Rafael Molina Jr. on Friday as he tried to flee his disabled vehicle.

Police say preliminary evidence shows that Molina pointed a gun at an officer before Heitzman and Hernandez fired at him. No details were released on how many rounds were fired.

Authorities say Molina died at the scene.

Records show Heitzman retired from the department as a sergeant before being re-hired in 2009. Hernandez has been with the department since January 2007.

Both officers are on administrative leave.
