Albuquerque Police Shootings Spurs Budget Request

Albuquerque's mayor is seeking additional city spending for police training and for the city's response to a still-pending federal review of allegations of excessive use of force and complaints of civil rights violations.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that Mayor Richard Berry's budget proposal will include setting aside approximately $1 million for those purposes.

The Police Department is under scrutiny because of numerous shootings by officers, including two fatal ones in March that prompted a large protest on Sunday.

The budget proposal also includes an additional $1 million for seven new civilian Police Department jobs to handle public-records requests and boost staffing in telecommunication, finance and the crime laboratory.
