Albuquerque Protester Files Motion To Attend Meetings

A lawyer for an Albuquerque protester who is facing a battery charge has filed a motion to allow his client to attend future city council meetings.

An attorney for David Correia filed the motion Friday and is seeking to have Correia's ban on attending such meetings lifted.

Correia, an American Studies professor at the University of New Mexico, was arrested Monday along with 12 others during a sit-in at the mayor's office. The demonstrators were protesting recent Albuquerque police shootings.

Authorities said Correia shoved an officer who was trying to prevent a crowd from entering Mayor Richard Berry's office. He faces a charge of battery on a peace officer and has pleaded not guilty.

A judge banned Correia from returning to City Hall as part of his conditions of release.
