Another Portion Of Gila Catwalk To Reopen

Gila National Forest officials say another portion of the popular Catwalk National Recreation Trail is expected to open soon.

Forest employees are replacing an additional quarter mile of the trail and hope to have the work done by Memorial Day.

Glenwood District Ranger Pat Morrison says the U.S. Forest Service recognizes the importance of the trail to local residents and tourists.

Last May, the Catwalk and Whitewater Picnic Area were closed due to public safety concerns that stemmed from the massive Whitewater-Baldy Fire, which grew to be the largest fire in New Mexico's recorded history.

It wasn't until October that a portion of the Catwalk was opened.

Officials say that during rain events, it will be necessary to temporarily close the opened portions of the trail due to potential flash flooding.
