Anthony Men Arrested In School Burglary

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two Anthony men after they were found with property that had allegedly been stolen from Gadsden High School.

According to court documents, deputies witnessed Mario Maynez, 25, and Alexis Avila, 18, near NM 28 and Westside Road just after midnight on Dec. 14. The two men reportedly looked suspicious and appeared to be carrying several miscellaneous items.

As deputies attempted to make contact with Maynez and Avila, the two men tried to dispose of the items they were carrying and ran. Deputies caught up with the two and took them into custody. Further investigation of the incident determined the items the two men tried to discard had been stolen from Gadsden High School.

Units were dispatched to the school where deputies found signs of forced entry. Items that had allegedly been stolen from the school included a digital camera, a portable two-way radio, stereo equipment, a space heater and several bags of chips and soda that reportedly had been removed from a vending machine.

Maynez and Avila were both arrested on charges of larceny, non-residential burglary, criminal damage to property and resisting or obstructing. At the time of his arrest, Maynez was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines.

Both men were transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
