April 4 Prescribted Fire Near Silver City

By KRWG News

Silver City – The Silver City Ranger District, Gila National Forest, has tentatively scheduled the 762 acre East Sawmill prescribed fire located 11 miles southwest of Silver City in the Burro Mountains and south of the Flying A Subdivision. Scheduled to start April 4th, the prescribed fire is expected to be completed in five to seven days.

Objective of the fire is to reduce fuel accumulations in pi on/juniper with some ponderosa pine and oak brush.

Fire personnel traditionally conduct prescribed fires during spring and autumn to take advantage of dry forest conditions to maximize consumption (burning) of hazardous ground fuels (needle cast, downed branches, logs, etc.).

Implementation and duration of the fire could change depending upon weather and fuel conditions and forecasted high winds or red flag warnings. Fire personnel will closely monitor the prescribed fire throughout the duration of the project.

When driving in the project area, please exercise caution as fire personnel will be working along the roadways. Drive with headlights on and reduce speed as the presence of smoke may reduce visibility along area roads.
