Archbishop Sheehan: Have We Forgotten The Reason For The Season?

http://www.archdiocesesantafe.org/ABSheehan/ABSheehan.html

Christmas decorations are up all over New Mexico.  But it seems the emphasis is on large Santa Claus figurines, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman.  There are twinkling lights and tinsel everywhere and people are busy buying and wrapping gifts in fancy paper with big bows.  We are all sending and receiving Christmas cards.  Dinners and trips are being planned.  Lots of money is being spent.  We are told we are supposed to say “Happy Holidays” -  not Merry Christmas!

It seems like our secular society has forgotten the reason for this season.  The birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, is the reason for the season.  Many of us are more concerned about the external trappings and forget the internal preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

My Christmas message is that we remember that God sent us his son, Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.  May the love we have for family and friends and the joy of Christmas be based on the image of the Christmas Crib – the birth of the Savior Jesus!  Merry Christmas!
