Area Communities Win Safety Grants

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – The New Mexico Department of Transportation has awarded $1.1 million to several communities under the Safe Routes to School program.

The communities have spent the last couple of years developing plans to identify barriers to walking and bicycling to school and to find ways to address them.

The latest funding will help them implement their plans.

Alamogordo and Carlsbad are each receiving $275,000, while Mesilla and Silver City each will get $250,000.

The Las Cruces Public Schools District and Corrales will each receive $25,000.

The money can be used to improve sidewalks, crosswalks and signs within two miles of kindergarten through 8th grade schools.

It also can be used for such things as bicycle and pedestrian safety education.
