Las Cruces – Police in Las Cruces have made an arrest in a fatal shooting that happened at a local convenience store.
Police booked 26-year-old Eric Marquez on first-degree murder charges for the Thursday night shooting.
Police told The Las Cruces Sun-News that 22-year-old Julian "J.T." Melendres was shot twice at a store along U.S. 70 and died at the scene. Court papers describe him as an admitted gang member who was awaiting trial for shooting at a McDonald's employee in an apparent gang-related incident.
Police say Marquez believe Melendres had previously shot at his home and confronted him after he was seen driving by his house in a suspicious way.
