Arrest Made Following Non-Injury Officer Involved Shooting In Mesilla

Jacob Martinez

The man who was being detained Tuesday following an incident involving an officer with the Mesilla Marshal’s Office – who subsequently fired his duty weapon – has been arrested.

The shooting is under investigation by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of Avenida de Mesilla. The officer was reportedly trying to locate Jacob Martinez, 21, after Martinez had allegedly been involved in a domestic disturbance earlier in the afternoon.  The officer who responded to the incident learned Martinez had reportedly told his mother he would be waiting for the officer at Valley Plumbing in Avenida de Mesilla.

After the officer located Martinez, he reportedly perceived a threat by Martinez and discharged his duty weapon.

The round from the gun reportedly hit the building. No one was injured.

Martinez was arrested for battery against a household member. At the time of his arrest, he also had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines. He is being held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Officers from New Mexico State University Police are assisting the sheriff’s office in the ongoing investigation.
