Arrests In Storage Unit Thefts

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have arrested a man for breaking into and burglarizing self-storage units.

Marcus A. Ortiz, 25, of the 300 block of Willow Street, was arrested on a warrant and is charged with two counts of non-residential burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools. Ortiz was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $15,000.

Las Cruces Police received information that storage units at South Main Self Storage and Telshor Self Storage were broken into between the dates of January 21 and March 24 of this year. During that time there were 36 reported break-ins at each location.

Detectives learned that Ortiz rented storage units at both locations and, during the time frame, was captured on surveillance video using bolt cutters to break padlocks and steal items from the lockers. Ortiz had an accomplice on at least one of those occasions.

Las Cruces Police detectives are continuing their investigation and additional charges are possible. Anyone who may have knowledge of similar incidents is asked to call detectives at (575) 528-4222.
