Attorney General Issues Scam Alert for Grand Jury and Magistrate Judge Scam Calls

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas

Albuquerque, NM – This morning, Attorney General Hector Balderas issued a scam alert regarding phone recordings threatening New Mexicans with federal enforcement action by the U. S. Treasury and appearances before a grand jury or federal magistrate judge. The scam recording tells New Mexicans they must call various phone numbers with out of state area codes. Scams like this one are flooding New Mexico and since May 2, 2016, nearly 700 reports have been made to the Consumer & Family Advocacy Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General from across the state regarding various scams and consumer issues.

“Don’t let these scam recordings or live calls intimidate or scare you,” Attorney General Balderas said.” A government or law enforcement agency will never call you making threats of enforcement actions or appearing before a grand jury or judge.”

Attorney General Balderas reminds New Mexicans to never give out personal identifiers or financial information over the phone. If you receive a scam phone call hang up and report it to the Consumer & Family Advocacy Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General by calling (505) 222-9100 or toll free 1-800-678-1508.
