Audit: New Mexico DPS Gave Wrong Information On Grants

A federal audit says the New Mexico Department of Public Safety submitted inaccurate financial reports and delayed adopting key components of a sex offender law.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz announced Wednesday the release of a report, which faulted the New Mexico agency over its handling of $900,000 in Department of Justice grants to implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

According to the audit, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety did not comply with essential award conditions in financial reporting and performance. The audit says the agency also charged unallowable overtime to the grants and submitted inaccurate financial and progress reports.

A spokesman for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press.
