Authorities Identify Albquerque Suspect Shot By Officers

Authorities say two sheriff's deputies and one police officer fired multiple shots at a suspect accused of shooting and wounding another man in Albuquerque, carjacking two vehicles as he attempted to escape law enforcement and firing at officers.

The suspect, identified by Bernalillo County Sheriff Manual Gonzales Wednesday as 21-year-old Edgar Rene Alvarado, died from his injuries at University of New Mexico Hospital a day earlier.

Gonzales and Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden disclosed details of the shooting at a news conference Wednesday, saying officers surrounded Alvarado as he attempted to take a third vehicle.

But instead of taking the vehicle, Alvarado fled on foot, and Gonzales says the suspect fired at least one shot at law enforcement, with a bullet hitting a deputy's cruiser and prompting officers to return fire.

Officers involved in the shooting were not wounded.
