Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with the Director of the Center for Latin American Border Studies (CLABS) and New Mexico State University History Professor, Dr. Iñigo Garcia-Bryce. In 1979 CLABS was created at NMSU to bring awareness to students and the community on issues concerning Latin America and the U.S.-Mexico Border. An important function of the center is hosting lectures, workshops and conferences. Dr. Garcia-Bryce says the next talk will be about the Pope and the peace process in Colombia.
Garcia-Bryce: “We’re doing this in conjunction with Camilo Perez Bustillos who’s a visiting professor here in the Government Department and he’s going to be talking about a priest, Camilo Torres, who was also connected to the guerrilla movement in Colombia. And that’s why we’re going to bring together these two issues, in other words the issue of the Pope and of Catholicism of Latin American together with the issue of the peace process and the guerrillas in Colombia because there’s been a connection historically through liberation theology which was a very important trend in the church in Latin America that was connecting very often this very militant form of politics with Catholicism.”
The event will take place on Thursday, February 25th at 4 p.m. at the Nason House, the home of NMSU’s Center for Latin American Border Studies, located at 1070 University Avenue.
