Las Cruces – A White Sands soldier has won a couple of big prizes just before Christmas.
Spc. Michael J. Brewer received an engagement ring worth $30,000 and a $10,000 check Wednesday.
The Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/u6mVtG ) reports Brewer won the prizes from an Atlanta, Ga., jeweler who conducted a nationwide contest called "My Perfect Union."
When he announced the contest, jeweler Scott Anderson said the check and ring would go to someone who has done something above and beyond.
Brewer was awarded the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal With Valor, after he was severely injured during a June 27, 2010, attack in Afghanistan.
Despite his injuries, Brewer was able to lead his convoy out of a kill zone to safety. His actions prevented the convoy from suffering any casualties.
