Binational Gang Sent Weapons To Mexico

Former members of a trans-national gang have testified in El Paso that U.S.-based members obtained weapons and ammunition for their Mexico-based counterparts.

The testimony came Friday at the trial of Arturo Gallegos Castrellon, who is accused of ordering the March 13, 2010, shootings in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico of an employee of the U.S. Consulate there and two others. He has pleaded not guilty.

Gang members in El Paso began accepting weapons as payments for drugs so they could smuggle them to their allies in Mexico.

At one point, a gang member in El Paso arranged to buy 15,000 rounds of ammunition through someone in Midland with a license for bulk sales at gun shows. The trial was scheduled to continue Monday.
