BLM to Waive Fees at Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument

Las Cruces, NM – On May 16-17, 2015, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the designation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (Monument), the BLM will waive all site-specific standard amenity and individual day-use fees at Monument recreation sites and areas.  Other fees, such as overnight camping and group day-use sites, will remain in effect.

The 496,330 acre Monument was established on May 21, 2014, by Presidential Proclamation.  It was established to protect significant prehistoric, historic, geologic, and biologic resources of scientific interest, and includes four distinct areas: the Organ Mountains, Desert Peaks, Potrillo Mountains, and Doña Ana Mountains.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary, the BLM will waive the day-use fee at Aguirre Spring Campground; however, the $7 campsite fee will remain in effect.  In addition, all fees, excluding the group site fee, at Dripping Springs Natural Area/La Cueva will be waived.

According to BLM Las Cruces District Manager Bill Childress, “The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument is an outstanding destination for visitors locally, regionally, nationally, and from around the world.  It is a pleasure to waive day-use fees in celebration of the one-year anniversary of the designation.”
