Blowing Dust Causes Another Freeway Closure

For the second time in four days, blowing dust has caused the closure of a 62-mile stretch of Interstate 10 between southeastern Arizona and New Mexico.

Authorities say zero visibility in the San Simon area Thursday afternoon resulted in several vehicle accidents including one involving a semi-truck.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials say eastbound lanes of the freeway are being rerouted onto U.S. 91 north to U.S. 70 in Safford into New Mexico, where drivers could get back on I-10 at Lordsburg.

The detour route is about 110 miles.

Last Monday, a similar low-pressure system moved over Arizona and brought gusty winds that closed the same 62-mile stretch for about two hours.

A three-vehicle crash involving two semitrailers about 15 miles from the New Mexico border also forced the closure.
