Body Camera Program Delayed For Las Cruces Police Dept.

Officials say Las Cruces Police Department officers won't get body cameras until they complete a mandatory training next month.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that officials recently announce they are delaying the launch of the camera program so officers can meet with representatives from Taser, the company that manufactures the cameras.

Officials say the delay is largely tied to Las Cruces police's revised policy on recording devices, which was updated over the past year to include specific guidelines for video recordings. The policy, which underwent a "lengthy" approval process and was reviewed by police, city attorneys and outside law enforcement experts, went into effect on May 8.

Las Cruces Police Department says they expected to outfit some traffic and patrol officers with 72 new body cameras.
