The Border Patrol chief says agents can continue using deadly force against rock-throwers despite the recommendation of a government-commissioned review to end the practice.
The recommendations to prohibit deadly force against rock-throwers and people in vehicles were part of a broader internal examination of use-of-force policies and practices.
Border Patrol Chief Mike Fisher says U.S. Customs and Border Protection considered the proposed curbs very restrictive.
Under current policy, agents can use deadly force if they have a reasonable belief that their lives or the lives of others are in danger.
Fisher tells The Associated Press that there shouldn't be exceptions — like rock attacks — in which agents are prohibited from using deadly force if they believe it's necessary.
