Bringing Music Across America: A Conversation with Richard Dowling

Pianist Richard Dowling
Credit Leora Zeitlin

Richard Dowling has given almost 1,000 concerts for the Piatigorsky Foundation, whose mission is to make classical music an integral part of everyday life for Americans all over the country. Piatigorsky artists perform in unusual venues, such as schools, hospitals, prisons, and homeless shelters, and in rural communities that are not on the usual concert circuits. During a stop in Las Cruces to play concerts at the Good Samaritan Village and El Caldito Soup Kitchen, Dowling spoke with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about his work with the foundation, his life-long love of piano music, and two of his particular musical passions: Chopin and ragtime music.
