Silver City – Grant County authorities are investigating the discovery of a body found burning at a crude campsite near Silver City.
Deputies were conducting a welfare check Wednesday when they found a woman kneeling next to a campfire and a burning body off Highway 180 about five miles west of Silver City.
Deputies tried to question the woman, but she refused to answer.
Grant County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Aguirre said neither the woman nor the body have been identified at this point. Aguirre said it could not be determined if the remains were male or female.
The body will be sent to Albuquerque for an autopsy and could take several days before the cause of death is determined. The case is being treated as a homicide.
