Capital Projects Bill Dies As Democrats Balk At GOP Borrowing Plan

Funding for various state projects went up in flames after the Republican-controlled New Mexico House voted to pass a measure that Senate leaders vowed to ignore.

The House voted 36-32 in the New Mexico Legislature's final minutes of the 60-day legislative session.

The vote came after House Democrats failed to put money back into the bill to build senior centers across the state, for tribal projects and for community colleges.

Republicans said millions of dollars for such projects had previously gone unspent and using bonds to fund road projects showed foresight.

A House Ways and Means Committee amended the bill of nearly $270 million package that included highway improvements and upgrades at prison facilities.

Democrats say the House bill borrowed too much money.
