Car Owner Detains Las Cruces Auto Burglary Suspect

A man suspected of burglarizing a vehicle Wednesday afternoon was captured when the vehicle’s owner and a coworker locked him inside the car and called police.

Dennis J. Hanson, 20, whose address is listed in Valentine, Ariz., was arrested Wednesday afternoon and is charged with one count of auto burglary.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, Las Cruces Police were called to the parking lot of the Dairy Queen at 2601 N. Main St. where two restaurant employees were holding the doors shut on Hanson who was inside a Honda Civic.

Officers learned that a Dairy Queen employee was leaving the restaurant when she noticed a man, later identified as Hanson, inside a coworker’s Honda Civic. The woman used her cell phone to alert the vehicle’s owner who, along with another employee, went outside and prevented Hanson from exiting the car.

Officers determined that Hanson was attempted to steal the vehicle’s stereo. Hanson was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
