A February trial date has been set for two people accused of involvement in a 2009 drug cartel-related murder in El Paso: 19-year-old Juan Gerardo Garcia Jr., and 20-year old Christopher Duran. They are accused of involvement in the May 2009 shooting death of 37-year-old Jose Daniel Gonzalez-Galeana.
State prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against 21-year-old Michael Jackson Apodaca, who was a Fort Bliss soldier at the time of the killing, and 33-year-old Rueben Rodriguez-Dorado.
Police say the Juarez cartel ordered Rodriguez-Dorado to kill Gonzalez-Galeana because they believed he was cooperating with the U.S. government and had joined a rival group. Police say the victim was a mid-level cartel boss who coordinated drug shipments.
