Celebrate Fathers—Support Child Care and Parental Leave

Commentary: WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of Father’s Day, Joint Economic Committee Democrats released a fact sheet today underscoring the need for affordable, high-quality child care and parental leave. The fact sheet examines the crucial family-friendly policies needed to lift up all American families, including mothers, children and fathers alike.

The rates of stay-at-home fathers and single fathers have dramatically increased. The rates of fathers with a working spouse who provided care for their children under age 15 increased by over one-third in the 20 years leading up to 2011. However, 52 percent of working fathers say it is difficult to commit to both parenting and work, emphasizing how important policies like affordable child care and paid leave are to the entire family.
