Chaparral Man In Custody

The Chaparral man who was the target of a manhunt headed by the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office last week is in custody.

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Humberto Escajeda just before 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the 100 block of Lisa in Chaparral. Escajeda had a warrant for his arrest for escaping from a peace officer.

Escajeda was picked up on a warrant on Oct. 24 in Chaparral. At the time of his arrest, Escajeda had a bench warrant for failure to appear.  The deputy transported Escajeda to the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

The following day, another Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy served an additional warrant on Escajeda, this time for a probation violation following an aggravated-robbery charge in El Paso County.

During processing, Escajeda was told the $198 cash bond was paid for his traffic offenses and he was free to leave. The lapse in communication happened between the time Escajeda’s no-bond warrant was processed and the time his traffic citations were paid, allowing Escajeda to walk out of the detention center without answering to the no-bond warrant.

Escajeda is back in the Doña Ana County Detention Center without bond.
