Chapel Restoration

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Instructors at New Mexico State University and Do a Ana Community College are seeking volunteers to participate in a Community Adobe Education Day at the historic Phillips Chapel CME church on Saturday, June 19.

NMSU Professors Clarence Fielder and Beth O'Leary, as well as DACC Program Coordinator Ronald Taylor and instructor Pat Taylor, have been working with NMSU students in the DACC Adobe Restoration class to restore the 100-year-old adobe chapel. The process began in spring 2010 and will continue throughout this summer session.

"We really need the help to keep the work moving forward on the adobe plastering," O'Leary said. "We ran into some things we weren't expecting during the restoration so we're looking for some volunteers to come out and learn about adobe and the whole process to keep the restoration on track."

On Saturday, volunteers can learn to make adobe, learn the process of plastering and help with the structural improvements to the church. Volunteers are asked to wear work clothes and are free to set their own schedules; or interested parties can simply come to view the ongoing restoration work.

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19.

Where: Phillips Chapel CME Church, 638 N. Tornillo St., Las Cruces.

Who: Ronald Taylor, (575) 644-7404; Beth O'Leary, (575) 644-1668; or Clarence Fielder, (575) 642-6330.

If you go: Bring work clothes. Refreshments will be provided.
