Las Cruces – State police are investigating the discovery of a body in a burned out vehicle in Dona Ana County.
State police Lt. Eric Garcia says it's considered a suspicious death, and that neither homicide nor suicide has been ruled out.
Garcia says hikers stumbled upon the charred vehicle and remains late Sunday afternoon, and reported it to the sheriff's department.
Garcia says the Office of the Medical Investigator is using dental records and items found in the vehicle to identify the body.
It's unclear how long the body had been in the area, which was three to five miles from N.M. 404.
Garcia says, however, it was more likely days or weeks, not months.
The age and gender of the body were not immediately known.
