Check-Cashing Scheme Arrests Prompt Voter Privacy Concerns

Dona Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins

The Doña Ana County Clerk wants to end the use of complete Social Security numbers for voter registrations.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the push comes in the wake of last week's arrest of former Doña Ana County Clerk's office employee Maria Ceniceros on suspicion of stealing voters' names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth.

Three other employees were also arrested. Investigators say they notarized forged signatures on tax refund checks for returns filed with the stolen information.

Doña Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins says New Mexico is one of only four states in the country to require whole Social Security numbers for voter registrations.

County Clerks Affiliate executive director Daniel Ivey-Soto says the proposed change will likely be a source of debate this week as the state's 33 county clerks meet in Albuquerque.
