Children's Book Discourages Illegal Dumping

Together with a multi-agency illegal dumping partnership, the Doña Ana County Codes Enforcement Division has written and published a children’s book aimed at educating students against illegal dumping.

The book, “Desert Adventure” features a main character, Carlos the Coyote, who teaches children about how to spot illegal dumping and where to report it. The book includes activities and invites readers to take the pledge to put trash in its place and report illegal dumpers and trash sites.

Authored by Doña Ana County Animal Control and Codes Enforcement supervisor Lt. Mary Lou Ward, “Desert Adventure” will be handed out at area schools during anti-dumping presentations and other community outreach events.

Ward said the book will primarily be used in classroom outreach.

Creation of “Desert Adventure” was made possible through grant funding, and Doña Ana County owns the copyright for the main characters.

For more information on how to schedule a presentation or to obtain a copy, call the Doña Ana County Codes Enforcement Division at (575) 525-8846.
