City Of Rocks State Park Public Meeting Tuesday

  Silver City, NM – New Mexico State Parks invites citizens to a public meeting to comment on the draft Park Management Plan for City of Rocks State Park. The plan includes a review of existing park resources and proposes improvements for the next five years.

Copies of the draft plan are available for review at:  1) the City of Rocks State Park visitor center (located at 327 Hwy. 61 in Faywood, NM 88034); 2) the State Parks Division regional office at 5575 N. Valley Dr. Las Cruces, NM 88007; or 3) on the State Parks Division website at www.nmparks.com

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Besse- Forward Global Resource Center Auditorium, at Western New Mexico University, East 12th St., Silver City, NM 88061.  Verbal comments on the draft plan will be accepted at the public meeting. Anyone interested in providing written public comments may do so no later than October 8th, 2015, by submitting them to: 1) State Parks Division, 1220 South Saint Francis Drive, Santa Fe, NM 87505; 2) faxed to 505-476-3361; or 3) e-mailed to nmparks@state.nm.us(Subject: City of Rocks State Park Management Plan).

The plan proposes a variety of improvements to City of Rocks State Park as well as management recommendations. Improvements include adding several miles of trails, adding RV campsites, constructing an amphitheater for interpretive programs, and building an addition onto the visitor center.   Management recommendations include restoring some areas within the park, including the areas near the rocks, which may include the closure of some campsites.

Each state park is required to have a current park management plan.  The objective is to provide direction for the management and development of the park to protect park resources and enhance recreational opportunities.
